Turner worked two sketches of waterside buildings onto this page, with the bottom drawing inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated. In the top sketch, buildings are perched on the top of a headland while, in the lower image, a settlement clusters by the water’s edge. Such topography abounded in the Channel Islands and in the wide embouchure of the Seine, both of which were extensively studied in this sketchbook.
