Inscribed in partially erased black ink ‘GURNSEY [sic]’ descending vertically
 
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner inscribed the spine of this sketchbook with the name of the Channel Island of Guernsey, sketches of which take up a large number of its pages. The artist presumably made this note to make the item easily identifiable when stored on a shelf in the studio.
