With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a view along a wide Parisian thoroughfare. The bell tower of Saint-Etienne-du-Mont appears in the top right-hand corner of the page, shortened so as to fit within the available space. Turner made several sketches of Parisian streets in the present volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. These studies culminated in an engraving of a lively street scene in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04723.
