With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with cursory drawings of Paris seen from a high vantage. The dome which recurs on the right-hand side of the page may belong to Les Invalides or the Panthéon. Multiple panoramas of the city were sketched on this tour, contributing to the background vista of an engraved illustration for a new edition of Walter Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte (1834–36); see Tate impression T04744.
