With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the central strip of this page with a sketch of a hilly landscape punctuated by distant buildings. The handling is too cursory here to suggest a location, although this volume contains numerous such landscapes taken in the countryside surrounding Paris and around the River Marne to the east of the city. For comparison, a list of these drawings is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
