With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page a views of the palace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and its surroundings, situated some twelve miles west of central Paris. This location is given away especially by the drawings of the settlement’s wooden bridge on the left-hand side of the page. This site features on multiple pages of this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. An engraving of the palace subsequently featured in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04714.
