Henry Moore: Sculptural Process and Public Identity

In 1978 Henry Moore gave the Tate Gallery a gift of thirty-six sculptures in bronze, plaster and marble. Four of the large-scale sculptures included in the gift were installed in the Tate Gallery garden as part of the exhibition held in July-August to celebrate Henry Moore’s eightieth birthday. This photograph illustrates the complicated nature of the installation process. Here the leg section of Two Piece Reclining Figure No.5 1963–4 (T02294) hangs suspended from a crane. The bronze sculpture has been lifted from the flat-bed lorry high above the metal railings in front of the gallery before being positioned in the garden.
