Joseph Mallord William Turner Landscape with Trees near a Castle c.1799-1802

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 84 Verso:
Landscape with Trees near a Castle c.1799–1802
D04096
Turner Bequest LXIX 84
Ink and white chalk on blue laid paper, 135 x 210 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this slight study is apparently related both in technique and subject to the drawings on folios 13 recto and 16 recto (D04007, D04010), which seem to be ideas for a composition of Flint Castle.
The recto is blank, albeit numbered in red ink ‘84’ and stamped in black ‘LXIX-84’ at the bottom right. Finberg’s 1909 Inventory numbers the drawing on the present page without a customary ‘a’ suffix to indicate a verso.1 Either this was an oversight, or the page has since been rebound the other way round; see the sketchbook’s Introduction regarding its disrupted page order in general. This page was first assigned the Tate accession number D04097, but this was subsequently cancelled and D04096, intended initially for the recto in tandem with the Turner Bequest number, is now used instead.
