The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. It was used for a finished watercolour (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford),1 engraved in 1810 for William Byrne’s Britannia Depicta (Tate impression: T05948).
Other drawings in this sketchbook which apparently show Chester are on folios 35 recto and 59 recto (D05112, D05138); folio 52 recto (D05129) is a panorama of the city from near Hawarden, also developed for Byrne, while folio 36 recto (D05113) is doubtfully identified.
