This drawing belongs with the series of studies of Rievaulx now bound as the versos of folios 102, 103, 104, 105 and 106 (D02784, D02786, D02788, D02790, D02792); see also folio 108 recto (D02795). A detail of part of the Abbey ruins forms the subjects of one of the plates of the Liber Studiorum (see under Tate D08154; Turner Bequest CXVII Z); and much later in his career, Turner produced a watercolour of the abbey standing isolated in its valley, rather as here, for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales (York Art Gallery),1 engraved in 1827 (Tate impressions: T04503, T04504, T06071).
