Since it occurs in a sequence of drawings of Roslin, the presumption must be that this rapid sketch, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, represents either the castle there, or one close by. It does not seem to be Roslin, and is perhaps Hawthornden, a mile to the north-east on the same river. The drawing on folio 42 recto opposite (D02665) apparently shows the same place. Views at or near Roslin occupy folios 39 verso–49 verso (D02660–D02679).
