Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the subject is continued on folio 86 recto opposite (D02751). It is probably the East Side Pier at Whitby, one of two moles that protect the harbour formed by the mouth of the River Esk as it flows into the North Sea; see also folio 84 verso (D02748).
A long sequence of sketches on the Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Whitby runs between folios 83 verso and 98 verso (D02746–D02776).
