Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 1 Verso:
Edinburgh from the Water of Leith 1801
D02812
Turner Bequest LV 1a
Pencil on white wove paper, 195 x 127 mm

The subject is continued on folio 2 recto opposite and again of folio 3 recto (D02813–D02814). The incorporation of repoussoirs on either side of this view, for which compare the watercolour study from a slightly different viewpoint on the recto (D02811), suggests that Turner considered the possibility of using it as the basis for a finished composition.
