There is a pencil sketch of this subject in the 1801 Scotch Lakes sketchbook (Tate D02993–D02994; Turner Bequest LVI 40a–41), and a watercolour study is Tate D03632 (Turner Bequest LX A), as Finberg noted.1

Technical notes:
The brown smears in the lower part of this drawing may have been made with ‘tobacco water’ (see the Introduction to the ‘Scottish Pencils’), and one of them seems to have been made intentionally, though the others appear random.
