The colour studies here relate to Turner’s Scottish tour of 1801. The large finished watercolour Edinburgh from Caulton–hill was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1804, but remained in Turner’s possession (Tate D03639; Turner Bequest LX H);1 it is addressed in the ‘Exhibition Watercolours 1804–15’ section of this catalogue.
