Not mentioned by Finberg,1 this slight drawing seems to be a study of the spur of Snowdon that rises immediately behind Dolbadarn Castle as seen from across Llanberis Lake in Turner’s series of views. For another pencil study apparently made on the spot on the reverse of one of these large sheets see Tate D40546 (the verso of Tate D04177; Turner Bequest LXX Z).
There is a watercolour view of the lake and castle on the recto of the present sheet (Tate D04176; Turner Bequest LXX Y).
Technical notes:
There are traces of a vertical central fold.
