With the sketchbook orientated to portrait, here Turner has depicted a ‘Farm Yard’ and a ‘Road’ to a town with a ruined tower or castle keep. It could be that the artist pictures Caister Castle here, the keep of which remains intact to this day (see Tate D18180–D18184, D18201; Turner Bequest CCIX 13–15, 23a). A fifteenth-century stronghold, Caister is located moments north of Great Yarmouth.
Turner has in turn recorded the Norfolk port of Yarmouth in a separate sketch, rendered with the book orientated to landscape format. Yarmouth’s church of St Nicholas is identifiable by the tall spire at centre left (see also Tate D18176, D18178, D18212–D18214, D18217–D18221, D18223; Turner Bequest CCIX 11, 12, 29–30, 31a–33a, 34a).
