With the sketchbook turned upside down, here Turner has drawn two coastal views across the page. The uppermost prospect shows the same buildings as are depicted on the folio opposite (Tate D18187; Turner Bequest CCIX 16a). Below, Turner depicts the beach with a shrimp boat moored at centre and the coastline beyond. The artist has annotated the drawing ‘Sky in W [?Wind] Storm’. At top right there is a diminutive sketch of buildings which appears to have been inscribed ‘Caister Church’. Caister is a few kilometres north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, so it may be that Turner indeed pictures the coastline at or near this coastal town.
