These previously unidentified sketches show the Market Place at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. The uppermost sketch includes the cupola of the Fishermen’s Hospital at far right and the profile of St Nicholas’ Church, whose tapering spire rises loftily above the town. The remaining sketches record aspects of life and labour at the bustling market square. Barrows and handcarts are depicted being navigated through the streets to various destinations, there are wares being loaded and unloaded at stalls, and a ‘Fish Sledge’ used for shrimping at rear. Other studies of Yarmouth include Tate D18191, D18193; Turner Bequest CCIX 18a, 19a.
