Here Turner depicts the North Sea coastal village of ‘Walberswick’ next to Southwold in Suffolk. The top three sketches may have been rendered in sequence, to form one whole view when put together. They show the nucleus of Walberswick village with its houses, buildings and Church of St Andrew; fishing baskets and equipment on the beach with a view of Southwold in the distance; and finally the shoreline with a small jetty extending out to sea. The rear sketches show sailors or fishermen gathered around a vessel on the beach and views of the Suffolk coast towards Southwold and/or Dunwich. See also Tate D18259; Turner Bequest CCIX 52a.
