With the sketchbook orientated horizontally, here Turner has made a cursory sketch of what appears to Portsmouth Harbour. A castle has also been recorded to the left of the view; this may be Arundel Castle in West Sussex (see Tate D18418–D18425, D18428–D18461; Turner Bequest CCX 63–66a, 68–84a).

The executors of Turner’s estate have inscribed their endorsements on the sheet in black ink. Turner scholar Andrew Wilton, then the Assistant Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, has also inscribed a note in pencil which is dated 1973. These inscriptions are transcribed above.
