These two swiftly rendered views show coastline; the location may be Portsmouth or Brighton. They are connected to sketches showing coastal and harbour scenes which reminded Turner of Claude Lorrain’s marine landscapes at sunrise (Tate D18327–D18329; Turner Bequest CCX 10a–12).
