Armley village was dominated by the estate of the wealthy cloth manufacturer Benjamin Gott; the artist depicts his house on Tate D18395; Turner Bequest CCX 51. Above the river is a study of sky, lively with cirrus, cumulus and stratus clouds. Turner inscribes the colours of light as ‘yellow’, ‘blue’, ‘white’ and ‘red’.
