The principal drawing is a prospect of Arundel, West Sussex, a town situated on the banks of the River Arun and dominated by the ninth-century Arundel Castle (see Tate D18418; Turner Bequest CCX 63). There is a separate view of the Arun Valley with a ‘Road’ leading through a tree-lined ridge rendered above the main drawing.
These sketches are associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England: Arundel Castle on the River Arun, with a Rainbow (Tate D18139; Turner Bequest CCVIII F) and Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
