This is a study of part of Arundel Castle, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, situated in the Arun Valley of West Sussex. The drawing has been produced with the sketchbook turned upside down. There is another sketch of the same part of the Castle above the principal study, though it is rendered in profile only and has been left undeveloped.
These sketches are associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England print series: Arundel Castle on the River Arun, with a Rainbow (Tate D18139; Turner Bequest CCVIII F) and Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
