This rough and swiftly executed sketch may show the town of Arundel in West Sussex. The form of the church spire in this view matches that shown in Tate D18460; Turner Bequest CCX 84. Turner sketched Arundel extensively in preparation for two designs produced for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England print series: Arundel Castle on the River Arun, with a Rainbow (Tate D18139; Turner Bequest CCVIII F) and Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
