The view is to the north-west from the end of the lawn at East Cowes Castle, looking towards the towers of the main house flanked by conservatories, from the vicinity of the open-sided garden room; compare the view through its arches in Tate D20807 (Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 4). See also D20816 and D24847 (CCXXVII a 13, CCLX 11).
This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably in the course of a single visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection.
