The view is north-west across to the main part of East Cowes Castle, flanked by conservatories, from the open arches of the vaulted Gothic garden room at the southern corner of the lawn. Compare Tate D20805 and D20816 (Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 2, 13). A sketch of the view into the room itself is D20813 (CCXXVII a 10); the form within the right-hand arch in the present view is revealed there as a sculpted bust on a plinth.
This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably in the course of a single visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection.
