East Cowes Castle is seen here from what was its least prominent aspect, looking south-west with the square tower at the eastern corner of the main block left of centre and the tallest, octagonal tower beyond. Below to the right, the main entrance porch is lightly indicated. Compare the overall prospects from nearby (Tate D20827, D20833; Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 24, 30) and the closer views in D20831 and D24864 (CCXXVII a 28, CCLX 28). The band of light beyond the largely blank silhouette suggests that dusk is falling; another drawing from a similar angle shows rather more detail (D20847; CCXXVII a 44).
