This is one of a large number of sketches on loose sheets of paper depicting coastal terrain and seagoing vessels in various combinations. For the grouping and dating of these works to the middle and later periods of Turner’s career, see the section introduction.
Technical Notes:
There is a wide border of lighter paper along the edges of the sheet, presumably caused by exposure to light on the darker areas.

A pencil note reading ‘CCXLIV . 424’. A red ink note reading ‘215’. A patch of red wax of paper attached to the bottom right-hand corner.
