The subject is unidentified, but apparently Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. The drawing on the verso (D33800; Turner Bequest CCCXLI 118v) shows the distinctive lighthouse at Genoa, so the view here and the seemingly related Tate D33798 (CCCXLI 117) may show the city or its neighbourhood.
