The scene, buildings on the side of a hill seen from below, is unidentified, but may be Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Finberg’s described the subject as ‘Ruins’,1 but the roughness of the forms appears symptomatic of Turner’s haste rather than the state of the houses.
