This mountainous subject is unidentified, but may be in the north of Italy or neighbouring Switzerland; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. There seems to be a settlement with spires in the distance, above which Turner has written what Finberg tentatively read as ‘Astmangoli’,1 presumably a place name, although it and the scrawled notes in the foreground have so far resisted clarification.
