Colour Studies of Clear or Hazy Skies c.1816–40

This subsection comprises ‘colour beginnings’ predominantly characterised by the openness of their largely undeveloped skies, albeit some include light cloud forms or indications of strong sunlight. Some include a band of relatively nondescript landscape, not developed enough for them to be included in sections elsewhere in the present catalogue such as the present author’s ‘England and Wales Colour Studies c.1825–39’.1
Finberg dated the whole ‘Colour Beginnings’ section to around 1820–30, but most of those selected here are here given a broader range between 1820 and 1840, reflecting the artist’s production of similar ‘colour beginnings’ in relation to dated projects during the 1820s and 1830s. In some cases where a watermark provides a terminus post quem, and in several related instances there is a consensus for a date in the late 1810s.
