This loose landscape study appears to comprise a wide river or lake among hills, with trees on a far bank or possibly an island. The relatively enclosed landscape seems to preclude a link with the lake at Petworth House in Sussex, as suggested by Eric Shanes1 (see under Tate D25230; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 108); his other suggestion, a ‘Swiss subject’ appears more feasible, although the landscape maysimply be a generic study in atmosphere and colour.
