While this is the only drawing made at Southampton in the present book, there are more in the contemporary Cowes Regatta sketchbook including a smaller view of the same buildings (Tate D18108; Turner Bequest CCVII 61a). God’s House Gate, with its shallow triangular roof, and the massive, buttressed God’s House Tower (now a museum) are seen from the south-west near the Town Quay at the south-east corner of Southampton’s medieval walls; the twin gables on the left also appear in the other drawing, but do not survive.
The slight sketches on folio 11 recto opposite (D20612; Turner Bequest CCXXVI 10b) were probably made in the vicinity.
