Along the bottom of the page is a prospect south-west towards Cowes from the Solent, across the mouth of the River Medina. The small tower at the left appears to be the one surviving on the shore at the end of the East Cowes Esplanade, marking the corner of the Norris Castle estate; see under folio 40 recto (D20658; Turner Bequest CCXXVI 38) for views of the castle itself. Compare also the top sketch on folio 21 verso (D20629; Turner Bequest CCXXVII 20a). The drawing at the top left may show the same tower from the west. The loose sketch at the outer edge, made with the page turned vertically, shows yachts beyond a loosely defined shoreline, apparently with figures. They may be spectators at Cowes Regatta or related events; see under folio 13 recto (D20615; Turner Bequest CCXXVI 12).
For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events from late July 1827 onwards, see the Introduction.
