These drawings, made in three bands with the page turned vertically, show large racing yachts manoeuvring in relation to smaller sailing boats. For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the Introduction.
The page is inscribed by the Executors of the Turner Bequest, Charles Turner, John Prescott Knight and Charles Lock Eastlake, in ink ‘No 341 Contains 68 | Leaves, in Pencil & Colors | C Turner’ and in pencil ‘JPK’, ‘C.L.E.’ and (?in the latter’s hand) ‘68 counting | the wrappers’ at the bottom right, descending vertically relative to the drawings, and inverted in terms of the sketchbook’s foliation.
