With the page turned vertically, there are three studies here. At the top, yachts manoeuvre beyond rowing boats in a heavy swell, like those at the centre of the painting East Cowes Castle, the Seat of J. Nash, Esq.; the Regatta Beating to Windward, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1828 (Indianapolis Museum of Art).1 East Cowes Castle is indicated in the distance on the right; for other views of the castle see under folio 22 recto (D18030).
The second study shows the sun low over the masts of a large, silhouetted vessel; compare the contre-jour effect in Shipping off East Cowes Headland, of 1827 (Tate N01999).2 Below to the left is another study of a yacht.
