Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 28 Recto:
Yachts with East Cowes Castle in the Distance 1827
D18042
Turner Bequest CCVII 28
Pencil on white wove paper, 100 x 74 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘28’ top right, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCVII – 28’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, this slight study of yachts under sail apparently includes a perfunctory profile of East Cowes Castle in the distance at the centre. The general composition is comparable with that of the oil painting East Cowes Castle, the Seat of J. Nash, Esq.; the Regatta Starting for their Moorings, exhibited in at the Royal Academy in 1828 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London).1
For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the sketchbook Introduction, and for other views of the castle see under folio 22 recto (D18030).
