Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, at the top is a view of Sandwich with the Romanesque tower of St Clement’s Church, looking west up the River Stour towards the ogee dome of St Peter’s Church. The lower view seems to be a continuation to the right; compare the overall view on folio 43 recto opposite (D35833; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 42).
See also folio 40 verso (D35828; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 39a), where the same boats are seen. For other drawings of Sandwich, see under folio 6 recto (D35767).
