The view is west along Margate’s Great Beach, with boats beached and just off shore beside the jetty of Jarvis’s Landing Place, with the stone pier and lighthouse beyond. Some of the figures may have disembarked from or be awaiting the steamer seen up the Thames estuary in the distance. For more on the Margate setting, see the Introduction to this subsection.
Technical notes:
The left half of the top edge is irregular, presumably resulting from the sheet’s being torn from a larger one, as was Turner’s customary practice with blue paper; it did not preclude his using it for this quick study of so familiar a subject. Compare the deep blue of another Margate sheet (Tate D34336; Turner Bequest CCCXLIII 35).
Verso:
Blank; laid down. Inscribed on backing sheet in pencil ‘CCCXLIII’ bottom right.
