This drawing focuses on the turreted north-western end of the Château de Dieppe, high on cliffs overlooking the beach. Turner’s viewpoint is at the water’s edge, near where the rue Alexandre Dumas now runs; modern apartments at the foot of the slope do not obscure the main features recorded here. Compare the watercolour in the contemporary Dieppe sketchbook (Tate D35467; Turner Bequest CCCLX 9). The artist had first recorded the view in his 1821 Dieppe, Rouen and Paris book (Tate D24506; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 4), when he also note the ‘Sea’ in the foreground.
To the left and continuing a little onto folio 32 verso opposite (D35544), the town of Dieppe is seen to the north-west, with the dome and tower of the church of Saint-Rémy towards the gutter on the present page. For other views of Dieppe see under folio 31 recto (D35541).
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
