Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 41 Verso:
Studies of a Channel Storm; Sailing Boats off Channel Cliffs 1845
D35560
Turner Bequest CCCLXI 41a
Pencil on white wove paper, 111 x 86 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[?Cold Light]’ bottom left, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, the slight studies at the top and centre appear to show clouds and rain over a darkening sea, presumably recording a storm over the Channel. At the bottom left relative to the other sketches is the skyline of a horizontal seascape continued from folio 42 recto opposite (D35561) where shipping is seen, possibly with a note of ‘Cold Light’ above cliffs on this page.
See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views scattered through it.
