This page demonstrates two horizontal views of what may be Cobham Hall near Rochester, rather than the anonymous castle suggested by Finberg.1 The manor house, with its distinctive Tudor wings, is viewed over the crest of a hill and two distinctively gnarled trees dominate the foreground. Ian Warrell has identified several drawings of Cobham Hall near Rochester in this sketchbook, alongside which it seems this page might be considered. For a more detailed description of the history and architectural features of Cobham, and a list of the drawings Warrell identifies as depicting the site, see the entry for folio 19 verso opposite (D17238). Turner has annotated the topmost sketch with unfortunately illegible scrawl, and both drawings appear to elaborate on the prospect first explored on the opposite page.
