As recognised by Finberg, here Turner records a view of Folkestone distinguished by the distinctive tower of the main parish church of St Mary and St Eanswythe visible towards the left of the composition.1 Viewed from the west, the harbour and town at Folkestone are obscured by the intervening hillside. A view of the church from the opposite direction is recorded on the facing page, folio 28 recto (D17253). Jagged, spiky lines indicate where the grassy verge gives way to the rocky cliff-face.
