The prospect on this page describes a view of Sandgate observed from the Leas in Folkestone, as identified by Finberg.1 Sandgate Castle is visible towards the left on the shoreline, and a broad Martello tower is indicated on the right of the sketch. Turner makes a fragmented study of the same prospect on the following page, folio 38 recto (D17271), and emulates the present view again on folios 40 verso and 41 recto (D17276 and D17277). He executes a clearer drawing of an almost identical view on folio 44 recto (D17280). Turner returns to this scene again in the Holland sketchbook of 1825 (Tate D18883; Turner Bequest CCXIV 22 a).
