Continuing a sequence of studies of the site, across this and the facing page on folio 49 recto (D17289) Turner makes a detailed and expansive study of Dover Castle from the north.1 To the left of the distinctive tower is the Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary in Castro and the neighbouring ruined Roman lighthouse. The successive rings of defensive walls around the great tower are clearly visible, and Turner has carefully noted windows in some of them. The foreground is less detailed, comprised of hatching and vague linear indications to evoke the ditches which encircle the site.
