As identified by Finberg, the prospect on this page describes a view of Dover, looking west along the cliffs towards Shakespeare Cliff in the distance on the far left.1 At right, Dover Castle is visible. Slightly in front of the castle, towards the cliff edge and the centre of the page, St Mary in Castro church and the Roman lighthouse contribute a second architectural silhouette on the horizon. Turner explores many scenes of Dover in this sketchbook, and a comprehensive list of these studies is included in the entry for folio 71 verso (D17329). Drawings specifically of the Castle are explored in the entry for folio 24 recto (D17247). At far right this sketch continues across the gutter of the sketchbook and marks the facing sheet on folio 69 recto (D17324) with several brief lines.
