As recognised by Finberg, this page emulates the subject considered on facing page folio 73 verso (D17332).1 Seemingly made at Sandgate on the Kent coast, two sketches demonstrate opposite views of the town.
The top drawing, observed from an easterly viewpoint towards Folkestone, describes a flat, calm sea at far left. Sandgate Castle sits towards the centre, seemingly indicated by a descending arrow, and overlooked towards the right by an elevated Martello tower. Fishing huts and attendant paraphernalia are sketched loosely in the foreground at right.
A more detailed sketch across the middle of the page looks at Sandgate from the west. The castle and another Martello tower are included at right. The foreground is concerned with huts, dwellings, and the general trappings of seaside labour which are scattered along the shore. Several crosses on the left side of the sketch denote empty boat cradles, ready to support absent fishing vessels.
At the centre of the bottom edge of this page, a presumably accidental pencil line marks the paper.
For a comprehensive list of the pages in this sketchbook which describe views of Sandgate, and its Castle, see the entry for folio 16 verso (D17233). For a list of pages which show the Martello towers on the Kent coast, see the entry for folio 5 verso (D17215).
